My Connect.ed Experience

We need to educate students how to use technology, especially the internet, in a safe and guided environment. With an ever evolving society that has new social networking site to participate in month-by-month, children need to know and understand the danger of these sites. Social networking sites can become a gateway that opens the opportunity for cyber bullying. Cyber bullying is the enhancement of an everyday bully in the schoolyard, cyber bullying allows for the bully to digitally continue their actions in the victim’s home environment without physically being there! Its scary stuff… So how do we educate students to protect themselves from this sort of situation?

The online world opens doors to a number of threatening situations… Do your students know what a “groomer” is? Do they know what a hacker is capable of? How do they know if they’re involved with “sexting?” Do they know the danger of a “keylogger?”

“A school’s duty of care obligation with regards to the inappropriate use of online technologies should be seen in the context of how and when these technologies are used by students. Many cyber safety incidents will occur outside of school hours, yet these incidents can and will impact on students within the school environment and during school hours.”

It all starts at school, unfortuanetly…

Do your students know the difference between cyber aggression and cyber bullying? It depends on the harm factor of the victim as to whether we can define an online situation as cyber bullying or cyber aggression. Cyber bullying depends on the intent, is the bully going out of their way to continuously contact and context of the messages or posts. Some children don’t know when a joke has been taken too far or when they need to stop with the joking. Educators need to help students understand the definition of bullying and when a joke can be taken too far. The online stimulation in ACMA’s cyber smart successfully demonstrates a situation of cyber bullying. Also if your students are placed in one of these situations, do they know what action they need take, what evidence they need to keep?

Do your students know that using Peer-Two-Peer software’s to download free music and films is actually illegal?

All schools have frameworks and policies when it comes to using online networks, sites and the internet in general. But do the students and even their families understand why there are restrictions on a number of websites? By incorporating both the student and their family, education systems are applying the most effective way to influence safe online behaviours and to deal with online safety issues should they arise.

Connect.ed allowed for a cyber-safety education discussing how I as an educator can incorporate the following approaches into an ICT’s classroom:

  • •directly educate students about cybersafety with an education plan
  • •embed cybersafety messages and ideas into the curriculum where appropriate
  • •encourage safe use of online technologies in other relevant program
